A few days before Param Punjya Guruji attained Nirvana, he was staying at Punjabi Bagh. We shishyas used to find every possible opportunity, almost every day, to visit him and pay our obeisance. One day, when I was at my residence, all of a sudden, stacked slabs of glass fell on my right foot and the thumb was badly mutilated. It was bleeding profusely. The episode happened so suddenly that I was taken aback and felt as if two tons of dead load had fallen on my foot.
I was rushed to a doctor, a surgeon and, looking at the condition of my foot, he observed that the thumb of my foot needed to be operated. I declined to undergo an operation. He warned that, in such a case, looking at the gravity of the injury, the nail will never get attached to the thumb and there were grave chances of developing infection. In such an eventuality, the thumb may have to be removed. And, God forbid, if the infection spreads and takes the shape of sceptic, then the foot may have to be amputated.
I quietly told the doctor to bandage my foot. The pain was so intense that it was unbearable. He wanted to administer an injection to which I refused. He advised me to take antibiotics, I again declined. He advised me to take a pain-killer, to which I again politely refused because I never used to take medicines. He asked me to come every day to change the bandage because it was absolutely imperative to clean the wound carefully and maintain high standard of hygiene so that it does not develop into a sceptic. I told him that it would not be possible for me to come every day and requested him to teach my wife how to change the bandage keeping in view the precautions and high degree of hygiene to be exercised. He said, I was taking a great risk; however, he explained to my wife how to clean the wound hygienically without her hand touching it and how carefully she should replace the bandage. For the next few days, I could not sleep because of the acute intensity of pain. I used to keep my foot at a raised level but the moment I would put it down on the ground, I would get writhing pain.
On the 28th of July 1991, Pujya Guruji left his corporal frame and attained param samadhi. When his funeral procession started the next day, on 29th of July, from Punjabi Bagh to Najafgarh (which was later named as Neelkanth Dham – Smadhi Sthal), it started raining and I was badly drenched. I had no option, but to pass though the muddy waters at Punjabi Bagh and again at Najafgarh. There was no scope for me to maintain hygiene and keep my wound clean. At that point of time, I recollected the warning of the surgeon that if the wound catches infection and develops into sceptic, I would have no other option but to get my foot amputated. At the same time, I could not go away from the funeral procession till the pyre was lit and time came to disperse. I completely surrendered to Param Pujya Guruji and prayed, “May your wish prevail. If it be so, let my foot be amputated, but I will not leave this place till the last rites are performed”.
We reached home late in the evening, sad and tired. The loss of Guruji leaving His physical form was irreparable. I asked my wife to boil some water, bring the medicines, and replace the muddy bandage. Very slowly and cautiously she started untying the dirty bandage, feeling skeptical to the scene she was going to witness. The last layer of the bandage and the piece of cotton soaked in medicine was carefully removed. Lo and behold! The wound had dried. The nail had joined the thumb of my foot. I felt relieved of the intense pain.
The next day, I went to my doctor (surgeon) and showed him the dried wound and told him that my Super Surgeon had performed the surgery, you can examine it now. When the previous day’s episode was narrated to him and what all I had gone through in the rain and in the muddy water, he was literally flabbergasted and completely overawed with an open mouth. “Medical science has no answer to what you are showing to me and what you have narrated to me. It is indeed a miracle performed by your Guruji”, the doctor said.
In the heart of my hearts, I bowed to my Gurudev any number of times. He was kind to us in his physical form. He is kind to us in his astral form and, I have reasons to believe, he would remain kind to us for all times to come. Jai Gurudev.
Yes Bhallaji. I have experienced His many miracles when he was in physical form and many more day in day out after he attained Samadhi. He is always with us and His benovelence can not be fathomed. Guruji is the only FACT in our lives. Jai Jai Gurudev. Have mercy on us.
