The Real Sewa

The incident dates back to the year 1990-91, when   two rooms were being constructed at the “Neelkanth Dham”, in Najafgarh area of   Delhi, by the permission of Guruji. A small kitchen was also constructed and   tiles had to be put on the walls.

Guruji was at the “Dham”, and I was going towards “Dham” with the tiles in the   boot of my car and the labourers who who had to fix those tiles sitting in the   car. The time was around 3:00 p.m., when around the Pankha Road crossing, my car   hit a Rickshaw.

The labourers sitting in my car, escaped unhurt and ran away as soon as the car hit the Rickshaw, but the Rickshaw-puller got hurt in his leg. I took him for first aid, got his bandage done and gave him Rs.400/- to cover up the cost of his bandage and loss of work in the coming days.

After everything was done, I started for the “Dham” again which is around 8 kms. from the place where my car had hit. As soon as I reached there, Guruji called me and without letting me say anything, He asked, “How much money did you give to the Rickshaw-puller ?”

For a moment I thought that how did He come to know of the incident, then I regained composure and said,”Four Hundred Rupees.” On this Guruji asked me, that why did I give so much money to him when I had already got his leg bandaged ?

I told Guruji the truth. I told Him, that I had thought, the Rickshaw-puller would not be able to work for a few days because of the injury in his leg, so I tried to cover up his loss as well as to cover up for his change of bandages.

On hearing this, Guruji came up to me, patted my back and said in Punjabi language, “Twanu te main deyanga !” (I will give you). And really, from that day, He gave me like a Rainfall.

That day, Guruji had given me the lesson of my life. He said, “If you help a blind man cross the street, it is recorded with me. If you give food to someone hungry, it also recorded with me. This is the ‘Real Sewa’.”
